About Us

Founded by Faidra Roumpeka (Qanun, Santouri and Vocals) Mediterra Music Lab was born from a desire to connect and share music from around the Mediterrean and the Middle East through weekly Music Labs held at 'Wee Greek Kitchen' restaurant in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Since it's first session in February 2026 the lab has already hosted for over 45 different musicians including international visitors and is now a mix of core members, regulars and drop-in's.

 

Why a Music Lab?

Traditionally in Greece and for the last 30 years 'Summer Seminars' for musicians take place from late June to early September in the Greek islands. During these seminars which can last from 5-7 days you would take solo classes with your teacher in your instrument in the morning and then come together with the other musicians to practice in the evening. At the end of the week you would have built up a repertoire together and then this would be presented as a performance in the village square, at the nearby beach or at a small theatre that the organisers would have booked....

...When Summer is over however the musicians would miss these seminars during the colder months and then the idea of the 'Music Labs' where born and have been running for the last 5 years.  These labs start in September with performances taking place at Christmas and June.

In the poetic sense the music labs are the denial to accept that the Summer is over... and to create more music.
